Semester A 17/18, 3 November 2017

  • The Qur’an is the Speech and Statement of Allah. The Prophet SAW said: “The virtue of the Speech of Allah over all other types of speech is the same as the virtue of Allah over his creation.” – Tirmidhi. This illustrates that the Qur’an’s speech cannot be compared to any other speech.

“Indeed, they who have believed and done righteous deeds – those are the best of creatures.”

— Surah Al-Bayyinah

  • Therefore, we know as Muslims, we are the best of human beings. However, from us, there are still people who will be better than others. As the Prophet SAW said: “The best of you are those who have learnt the Qur’an and have taught it.” – Bukhari. This shows the value of the Qur’an.
  • Imam Al-Jazari says in a poem of his that a person is honoured by what they know. A person who is looked up to is the one who possesses knowledge others do not. If we are honour and respect people due to what they have learnt, then the people who have learnt the Qur’an should be venerated more as they have learnt the Words of Allah.
  • He then says in his poem that, “These people who have been given the Qur’an, verily, they are the People of Allah.” This is a commentary of a hadith where the Prophet SAW said that Allah has a special type of people who are so close to Allah, that they are described as being the family of Allah even though we know that Allah has no family. This great honour is given to the people who are People of the Qur’an. They are the elite and close to Allah. The poem then carries on saying that the people who have the Qur’an with them have been chosen by Allah and are from different backgrounds.
  • In the next life, the Qur’an will act as an intercessor for those who were attached to it. On a day where no prophet except Muhammad SAW will intercede for us, Allah will also listen to the Qur’an’s intercession and is said to be the “most trusted intercessor.”
  • If you are looking for ways to invest in your afterlife, know that learning the Qur’an is the best way of investing in both your afterlife & your parents. On the Day of Judgement, everyone will be naked – with no clothes, barefoot – with no shoes yet the parents of those who have memorised the Qur’an will be wearing clothes from Jannah. A crown will also be placed on their heads, which will be brighter than the light of the Sun. It is understood from this hadith that individuals who have been given this honour will not be punished by Allah SWT and so they will be pardoned.
  • ‘Aisha RA says that Jannah will have the same number of levels as the number of verses in the Qur’an. So, with memorisation of the Qur’an, you will potentially be placed in the highest level of Jannah.

ULTIMATELY, WITH REGARDS TO OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THE QUR’AN WE MUST ALL TRY TO BE ONE OF THREE TYPES OF PEOPLE:

  • Those who have memorised the Qur’an, they are the best type of people.
  • Someone who takes at least a portion of the Qur’an, learn as much as you can.
  • Those who have at least a passion and love for the Qur’an.
